The Challenge – UEFA Super Cup matches are watched by millions of viewers worldwide and demand the highest standards of operational resilience. The stadium and broadcast lighting loads associated with the event exceeded the capacity that the venue’s mains supply could comfortably deliver on its own, requiring a temporary power solution capable of safely sharing load with the existing electrical infrastructure throughout the match.

Any interruption to power during the live broadcast — particularly across the stadium lighting circuits — was unacceptable. The solution had to integrate seamlessly with the venue’s permanent electrical systems, comply with UEFA’s match-day standards, and be ready and proven in advance of a fixed kick-off time that left no margin for delay.

Our Solution

Generator Plant

  • AC Automation supplied two 550 kVA hire generators from its own fleet, configured to synchronise and run in parallel with the stadium’s mains supply throughout the event. Rather than operating in standby, the generators actively supplemented the mains — sharing load with the incoming utility supply to meet the elevated stadium and broadcast lighting demand without overloading any single source.

Equipment Installation

The complete event power package was delivered by AC Automation, including:

  • 2x 550 kVA hire generators
  • Fuel storage tanks to support continuous running over the event period
  • High-current power cabling and connections between the generators, fuel system, and stadium electrical infrastructure
  • Synchronising control and protection arrangements

All equipment was transported, installed, and commissioned by AC Automation’s own engineers in the days leading up to the match.

Liaison and On-Site Attendance

  • AC Automation acted as the single point of responsibility for the temporary power scope, liaising directly with the IFA, UEFA’s event team, and Windsor Park’s operational staff to plan equipment positioning, cable routing, fuel logistics, and integration with the venue’s permanent electrical systems.
  • On match day, AC Automation engineers were in attendance throughout the event to monitor system performance, manage any operational interventions, and provide immediate response capability if required.

The Outcome – The UEFA Super Cup Final 2021 was delivered with the AC Automation temporary power package supplementing the mains supply throughout the entire event without incident. With the generators sharing load with the utility supply across the duration of the match, the stadium and its broadcast lighting circuits operated reliably from kick-off through to final whistle.

For the IFA, UEFA, and Windsor Park, the result was a fully integrated, single-source temporary power solution delivered to a hard fixed deadline on a globally broadcast event — reflecting AC Automation’s ability to plan, deliver, and operate event power packages at the highest level of demand.
